John Martin -  Customer Review

I was quite happy with my Hi Fi system - it sparkled. Several years ago I purchased a platter mat using a PVC /air bubble matrix for my TD 206 turntable and was amazed at the improvements to the sound-especially more detail, somewhat cleaner high notes and tighter base. When I heard that essentially the same technology was used for various component mats and footers I called Lawrence Mittler and asked for a few samples. Well, with each component I placed on the 12 mm foundation mat with 12 mm footers I noticed an immediate improvement-greater resolution and detail, clean high frequencies and tighter base. And, to my surprise, the soundstage which had stopped at the edge of the component rack, now extended well into the room, with greater height, width and depth. With some passages of music the impact was like a body slam.

I have now added the mat and footers under each of my components-
My system is now simply quite magical and feel the MitMats are the best money I have spent on my system.

Back in 2014 I did a review on a number of turntable mats for my Linn lp12. Over the years I have tried a number of different mats, cork, suede and cork, leather, even the high end Auditorium 23 hommage mat. But up till recently I have stayed with a slighly thicker and heavier felt mat that was put out back then by a UK Linn dealer. While these other mats were good in their own way, most of the time they over deaden the record. While the instruments were clear the 3D effect was gone.

Recently I heard of a new Canadian turntable mat called the Mitmat when comes with a diameter of either 300MM or 295MM. The 295MM is specified for Technics and Linn turntables as they have a lip on the outer edge. The Mitmat platter is 3MM thick and has no label recess for consistency in thickness. The mat uses microcell technology to absorb and dissipate vibrational energy. When I bought it I was expecting a floppy soft mat but this is not the case. The top and bottom of the mat is PVC with a layer of microcell bubbles between. Technology is all fine but how does it work? The first thing I noticed was how flat it was and how well it coupled with the turntable platter. It was like a second skin to the turntable platter. Another good point is that there is no fear this mat will come off when removing the vinyl record. It will stay put.

I tried the mat with two different cartridges, an Ortofon MC3 Turbo which is a high output moving coil cartridge and a Nagaoka MP 500. In both cases I found the mat improved the dimensionality of the records and seemed to allow the music to come from a clearer and darker background. I did not lose any air in the recordings and it allowed the sounds to be integrated holistically. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase and feel it was a great addition to my turntable.
